Job Position:
Senior/Principal Engineer – Chassis Design

Job Status:
Permanent Staff Position

Reporting to:
Chassis/Cab Engineering Manager within Engineering Department

Qualifications:

• Min qualification HND in Mechanical Eng or the ability to demonstrate the same level of competence with some experience in relevant industry.
  
• Ideally - Member of recognised engineering institution, e.g. IMechE.
  

Knowledge & Experience Essential:

• Truck, or related product, (bus/tractor/commercial vehicle) chassis design.
  
• Management of chassis design projects from concept to production.
  
• Management of internal and external suppliers.
  
• Understanding of required quality levels for this type of business.
  
• 3D CAD modelling, general arrangement and production drawings.

It is also desirable (but not essential) to have experience of:

• Creation of Technical construction files.
  
• Solid Edge CAD experience.
  
• Supervision of support engineers.

Responsibilities:

Job Purpose:
To interpret specifications into cost effective, functional designs and systems, and to provide company wide support for design implementation. Projects may include complete change of vehicle’s axles/adding air suspension etc.

Work to Industry & Engineering Practices:

• Draughting practices to BS308/BS8888
  
• Working knowledge of regulations, British Standards and codes of practice relevant to the equipment being designed.
  
• Application of FMEA, VE and DFMA as appropriate.
  
• Maintain records of design calculations and assumptions.
  
• Adherence to Company procedures (ISO 9000)

Design & Dealing of Systems & Components:

• To investigate /validate design instructions to confirm and/or revise requirements.
  
• Close liaison on concurrent activities with internal/external suppliers/customers securing relevant Application and Installation Approvals.
  
• Compilation of Engineering Master Parts Lists and design release documentation.
  
• Check drawings, designs and calculations initiated by Engineering personnel to an agreed level.

Technical support:

• To provide technical support to internal and external suppliers/ customers as and when required.

Physical:

• Full time CAD operation.
  
• Fit for frequent, lengthy driving trips.
  

Other:

• Occasional o/time.
  
• Service support/ off site visits.
  
• Occasional overseas travel.
  

Salary/Rate:
Senior Engineer - £30k - £35k plus O/T
Principal Engineer - £35k - £40k with bonus potential
